Luz de Mi Sol — a name my child conceived, whose own name means “light” — draws from the radiant force that sustains all existence. The sun is more than a celestial body; it is the brightest star, illumination, warmth, and the primal spark from which life and growth unfold. Its brilliance touches every corner of the Earth, nurturing seeds into forests, awakening waters into oceans of movement, and igniting the cycles that sustain us.
Within the sculpture, her belly holds this power: a singular bulb, half bare light, half golden film. The luminous half shines inward, bathing her in warmth as she gazes upon it with passion and love, a private radiance between mother and child. The golden half, mirrored like a fisheye lens, reflects the viewer and their surroundings, forcing them into the work. This reflection is not passive but a question: how will this creation affect you? What role do you play in shaping the universes that new life sets in motion?
Here, intimacy and universality converge — the tender glow of a mother contemplating her child and the inescapable reminder that creation ripples outward, implicating us all.
ABOUT THE SERIES
Privilegio de Crear Universos
(Privilege of Creating Universes)
Series of One-of-a-Kind Digital Scenography Sculptures
This series invites viewers into the unseen, metaphorical, and surreal, where a woman’s belly becomes a universe in its infancy — a cosmos not yet born but brimming with infinite potential.
Each sculpture interprets the belly as a microcosm and macrocosm, a canvas of creation. Through clay, blown glass, LED, circuitry, 3D print, paint, wood, electricity, and programming, the works embody both the intimate and the cosmic — transforming the belly into a luminous threshold between potential and manifestation.
Privilegio de Crear Universos is an homage to motherhood as both biological and metaphorical: the act of bringing forth life, ideas, and worlds. It honors the courage of those who choose to create — whether shaping a child, an artwork, or a dream — and celebrates creation as an expression of autonomy, imagination, and boundless possibility, regardless of sex or gender.
What we choose to create is never neutral; it ripples outward, shaping not only ourselves but the world we inhabit — touching other people, societies, and even the natural environment. Each act of creation carries the potential to nurture or to transform, to seed futures and reimagine what is possible. In this sense, the series is also a meditation on responsibility: a reminder that every universe we bring into being has the power to alter the shared fabric of existence.
