The Prototype
The Perennials, Series No. 01
First installed in March 2019 at Little Tree Art Studios, the original Perennials prototype marked the inaugural realization of the series. The sculpture now resides at South River Art Studios, where it continues to operate beautifully years later. Fabricated through 3D printing and fiberglass processes, the prototype carries a distinct material composition from later works, which are produced in recycled plastic. As the foundational chapter of the series, the prototype established the technical resilience, sculptural language, and long term viability that inform all subsequent Perennials installations.
From its first installation, the prototype demonstrated the social function that would become central to the series. It quickly emerged as a gathering point, drawing pedestrians into prolonged engagement. Visitors paused, lingered, and returned, using the sculpture as an informal meeting place and point of orientation. Upon discovering its ability to charge mobile devices, engagement deepened further. People of all ages interpreted the work in multiple ways, gathering beneath its colorful illumination, resting against it, or exploring it through repeated interaction. This early response confirmed the work’s capacity to operate as a civic honeypot, activating public space through curiosity, utility, and sustained use.
