Downtown Largo, MD
WMATA Blue Line
Flow
Series No. 02 - 06
Premiered on June 17, 2025, this installation marks the first full realization of The Perennials in its current incarnation. Situated within a transit focused civic environment, the work responds to continuous movement through the station, translating circulation, infrastructure, and passage into a water based visual language and integrated ground mural. The fluid designs draw from the series’ origins in Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria, where water functioned as both force and destiny.
Fabricated using recycled plastic for the first time in the series, the sculpture is hand painted using a specialized technique developed to bond with the material. As daily commuters engage with the work, it operates as civic infrastructure, offering mobile device charging while serving as a point of orientation, visual pause, and nighttime illumination. Interaction extends digitally through the sculpture’s QR interface, where visitors access local information and transit resources and regularly subscribe to learn more about the project and its expanding global series, allowing the artwork to sustain a living dialogue with its audience. Commissioned by the Prince George’s Arts and Humanities Council in partnership with WMATA Art in Transit, the installation is permanently situated within the public realm as both landmark and serviceable public artwork.
